Wirral chocolatier wraps up his business as recession bites

ONE OF Wirral’s leading chocolatiers is closing his business because of the recession.

Tom Lang bought the established chocolate shop Sarjeants in Hoylake 10 years ago, but says he cannot survive the economic downturn.

He has sold off his equipment and is selling his remaining stock and expects to close by Christmas.

It will end the 26 years of the shop and chocolate factory on Birkenhead Road in Hoylake.

Mr Lang, a former pub manager, now plans to become a driving instructor.

He said: “The recession means we are just not busy enough – chocolate is a luxury item and one of the first to go.”

The shop was established by Roger Sarjeant in 1983 and after 16 years Tom Lang, who was looking for his own business to run, paid a visit.

Mr Lang said: “I used to run pubs for a living and was fed up doing 90 hours a week for someone else, and I had decided to work for myself.

“I was looking for a business to buy and this was for sale.
