Conservative Party leader David Cameron paid tribute, saying: “Leonard was a popular and active member of the House of Lords, and a good friend to the Conservative Party.
“He regularly offered me his sage advice and words of wisdom, which were always gratefully received.”
His hobbies included cricket – he was president of Lancashire County Cricket Club – art and stamp collecting.
Jim Cumbes, chief executive of Lancashire CCC, last night said: ““Not ostentatious in any way, he was delightful company and loved nothing more than discussing the events of a day’s play, whether a Test Match or a Lancashire match.
“We will miss him not only for his invaluable help at the club, but as a gentleman with what I would call old-fashioned values, and a leader. A true president. I will also miss him as Leonard, a pal.”
Lord Steinberg married his wife, Beryl, in 1962, and had two children and six grandchildren.
