Liverpool DaDaFest: A glimpse into the life of a burlesque performer

FEATHER boas, rhinestones, corsets, thongs, heels and tassels spring forth from Millie Dollar’s bulging carry case.

It’s alluring and terrifying at the same time, the ultimate femininity – requiring maximum effort.

Millie often makes herself available for one-to-one or small group workshops offering sessions on the tricks of her trade.

I swap my sensible flats for tottering diamante-studded heels, and within minutes she’s expertly upped my hair into victory rolls and swept on the mandatory Winehouse-style eyeliner.

Something in the hands of my sexy gloves distracts me.

“Oh, I forgot about the glitter,” Millie laughs, having previously stuffed it in the fingers for a shimmery shower as she’s twirling the removed item.

Now I know.

We strut and tease until I – almost – don’t feel quite as silly. Milly looks gorgeous, a complete natural, and it’s impossible not to admire and be inspired by the persona and career she has created for herself completely from scratch.
