Probe into water poisoning at Liverpool pool

AN INVESTIGATION is under way after a poisoning scare at a city swimming pool.

One man and 10 children were rushed to hospital after being overcome by chemicals in the water at the council-run Garston Lifestyles Centre on Wednesday night.

The swimmers complained of burning throats and itchy eyes and skin and were coughing and struggling to breathe.

They were treated with oxygen masks and remained in hospital for several hours.

Liverpool City Council tested the pool and it was declared safe before being reopened yesterday.

A council spokesman said: “There was an incident last night in the swimming pool of Garston Lifestyles Centre which resulted in eleven people – one adult and 10 children – being taken to hospital for nausea.

“A joint investigation has been launched by Liverpool City Council and the Health and Safety Executive to determine the exact cause of the incident.”
