Speaking after she received the accolade, the former tax inspector said: "When I got the letter, I got quite emotional because I wanted to tell my parents and I couldn't. Of all the things I've done, this would have been the best for them.".
She said she was “honoured” to receive the OBE for her drama and charity work.
Johnston has been a long-time gay rights campaigner.
Recently, she has supported the campaign to free jailed Liverpool fan, Michael Shields.
In 2004, she appeared in one episode of the series Who Do You Think You Are?, in which she traced back her family tree.
