Victims Champion Sara Payne and Prime Minister Gordon Brown visit Widnes victim support centre

“VICTIMS Champion” Sara Payne paid a visit with Prime Minister Gordon Brown to a support centre for those who have suffered at the hands of yobs.

Ms Payne, mother of murdered eight-year-old Sarah, yesterday called for a radical overhaul of the criminal justice system to better serve victims.

And she and the PM went to the Anti-Social Behaviour Victim and Support Service, at the Ditton Community Centre, Widnes.

Ms Payne said: “They do fantastic things here.

“It is vital the community have somewhere they can come so they understand they are not the only ones suffering.”

And a teenager who saw her father kicked to death by teenage thugs told the Prime Minister that the law needed to be tougher on criminals.

Amy Newlove, 14, from Warrington, said that yesterday would have been her father Garry Newlove’s 50th birthday.

Two years ago, he was battered to death outside his own home by a gang, after he confronted them about vandalising his wife’s car.

During a question-and-answer session with a live audience in Manchester, Amy said: “Every day, I cry all day.

“Isn’t it about time you made sure the law and sentences were a lot tougher?”
