Alcohol review at Liverpool's Echo Arena after Morrissey hit by crowd missile

Morrissey is hit on the head by a bottle of water

THE sale of alcohol and food at Liverpool’s Echo Arena were under review today after pop star Morrissey was hit on the head by a plastic glass thrown from the crowd.

The former Smiths frontman stormed off stage following the attack – cutting short a near sell-out gig in front of 8,000.

The Manchester musician was on only his second song on Saturday night when the missile struck him.

The singer was kneeling down shaking hands with fans on the front row when he was hit.

Furious, he stopped singing, said a curt “goodbye” and left.

The concert was stopped for around 15 minutes as fans chanted his name. A lone figure then appeared on stage to announce the singer had been hit by a bottle and would not continue – sparking a chorus of boos.

Fans were today waiting to hear whether they would get refunds for their tickets.

Wearing a brown suit and blue shirt, the 50-year-old cult lyricist had made a spirited start with This Charming Man and was well into Black Cloud when the attack happened.

Members of the crowd expressed both fury at whoever threw the missile and disappointment the singer did not soldier on through the gig.

The Arena management said it would now review how it controls crowds and drinking at events.

General manager Tim Banfield said: “We are exceptionally disappointed that one individual should choose to recklessly cause the concert to be abandoned, ruining what should have been a brilliant night out for thousands of Morrissey fans.

“It is extremely difficult to prevent people who are determined to act in this way but, in the light of this incident, we will review all arrangements with regards to stewarding and food and drink consumption in order to assess what more we can do to tackle the small minority who appear incapable of behaving in a responsible manner.

“However, we do have to be mindful of the overwhelming majority of customers who buy tickets, attend the show, behave responsibly and thereby ensure we continue to attract large acts to Liverpool.
