Merseyside apprentices meet Prime Minister Gordon Brown

APPRENTICES from Merseyside told the Government’s most senior politicians how the scheme has changed their lives.

More than 40 apprentices went to 10 Downing Street to show Prime Minister Gordon Brown, business secretary Peter Mandelson and TUC General Secretary Brendan Barber the success of the scheme.

Merseytravel apprentice Leanne Talent, 18, was one of three chosen to address the gathering.

She said: “If someone said to me 12 months ago that I’d be stood in Downing Street making a speech, I would have thought they were joking.”

Leanne, from Walton, joined ministers, union leaders and employers at the event.

She said: “I was terrified but once I started to speak it got a bit easier. I told them my mum was proud of the progress I’ve made since I started my apprenticeship.”

She was joined by other Merseytravel apprentices Rachel Farnan, Nicola Parker, Joanna Wiczak and Gary Murray.

Chief executive Neil Scales said: “We’re proud of all of them.”
