Another favourite is also former Lord Mayor Steve Rotheram, who held the city’s highest civic post during Capital of Culture.
He has a high profile as a result of his successful year as Lord Mayor. He said: “It is not something I had given much thought to.
“It was a shock to all of us that Jane was standing down.
“She has been a really good MP.”
He said he was not ruling himself in or out of the contest at this stage.
Cllr Roz Gladden, who works in Mrs Kennedy’s office, could also be a contender.
In 2007, she missed out on becoming Labour’s West Derby candidate to former minister Stephen Twigg after incumbent Bob Wareing was de-selected.
Other names include Cllr Wendy Simon, opposition spokesman for health, and Cllr Anna Rothery.
There is likely to be considerable interest from outside Liverpool as well.
Miss Berger, who is in her late 20s, is regarded as a future big hitter in the party and hit the headlines in 2005 after she resigned from the national executive committee of the National Union of Students because of “continued apathy” to the suffering of Jewish students.
