BRITAIN’S chief Rabbi welcomed plans to build Europe’s largest Jewish school campus in Liverpool.
The £25m scheme will create new facilities for King David high school, primary school and kindergarten, in Childwall, as well as the Harold House Jewish community and youth centre.
The school is currently housed in a dated 1950s building.
Chief Rabbi Jonathan Sachs was yesterday told work will start in a couple of weeks when he visited the school.
Cllr Keith Turner, Liverpool council’s executive member for education, said: "The changes will help King David become a focal point for the Jewish community in Liverpool.
"It will further meet the demands of a 21st century curriculum."
The school, which was designed and will be built by Vinci Construction, will pioneer "flexible learning environments" equipped with wireless internet access.
Staff hope the new classrooms will be suitable for new teaching styles.
Improved IT facilities, breakout rooms for independent study and group work, a new foyer and reception, sports hall and sports pitches are also planned.
Brigid Smith, head teacher at King David high, added: "An important part of the teaching of humanities subjects is class discussion, independent learning and project work.
"The new learning bases will encourage this with moveable walls, which will completely transform the classrooms from one lesson to the next."
Campus group chairman Max Steinberg said: "The development will be a major asset to the community and provide a landmark building, which we will all be proud of."
