Cllr Brant also ruled himself out.

Cllr Rothery currently works for a charity helping migrant workers.

Last night, she said: “I would be honoured to be considered as an elected representative for this great city.

“If I was successful, I would hope to bring honesty, integrity and a passion to serve our city well.”

Other names include Cllr Wendy Simon, opposition spokesman for health, care and safeguarding, and Cllr Roz Gladden, who works in Mrs Kennedy’s office.

Luciana Berger, a rising star of the Labour party has also been mentioned as a possible candidate from outside the area.

She is regarded as a future big hitter in the party and hit the headlines in 2005 after she resigned from the National Executive Committee of the National Union of Students because of “continued apathy” to the suffering of Jewish students.
