Merseyside burns units win reprieve from Strategic Health Authority

A PROPOSAL to send severely burnt Merseyside patients to Manchester for treatment has been kicked into the long grass.

Units at Whiston and Alder Hey were put under threat, after a proposal to create "supra" centres in Manchester and Wakefield was put forward.

But a statement released by the Strategic Health Authority today concludes there is no "compelling evidence" for the changes.

However, it adds there is a chance the issue could come up again, if clinicians can prove the supra units would improve the care of severely burnt patients.

Mike Donovan, unison rep and chair of the burns campaign steering group in Whiston said: "It seems to have been pushed in the long grass and we are very pleased about the decision.

"Campaigners can stand down for now, but we still need to be on stand by, because it has not been ruled out completely in the future. We have what we want for now."
