EVERYONE involved in the Olympic Park build agrees that the most difficult engineering job is the stingray-shaped aquatics centre roof.
“It is an incredible piece of architecture – but a b----- to build,” Olympic Delivery Authority chair John Armitt said last week.
The 3,000 tonne roof, 160m (175 yards) long and up to 90m (98 yards) wide in parts, rests on just three concrete supports.
The aim of the Zaha Hadid-design has been to create a signature landmark to the southern end of the Olympic Park in Stratford, east London, where around 70% of spectators are expected to arrive, according to John Nicholson, the 2012 Aquatic Centre project director.
