LIVERPOOL’S “Bling Bling” building now has a tenant with as much character to rival its most famous occupant, hairdresser Herbert Howe.
As the mysterious Mankey Monkeys project gathers pace, a new headquarters has been created on the ground floor of the striking Liverpool One address, where the public will be able to see the ambitious charity art works come to life.
More than 90 individual monkey statues will be made and “fostered” by businesses all over the city.
The artists behind Mankey Monkeys are David Hallangen-Lake and his wife, Eirin.
Inspired by Go Superlambananas and Go Penguins, they wanted to offer a fun, more affordable alternative, with all proceeds going to Alder Hey children’s hospital.
Appointing themselves chief monkey ambassador and chief monkey WAG, they said rumour has it the monkeys are making their way to Liverpool on banana boats right now.
As yet, the 3ft statues have not even been seen, but big city names were so charmed by the cheeky monkeys, they have signed up to foster or donate materials.
Everton FC, Tesco in Liverpool One, Bugworld, Cricket, Rapid Hardware and Wickes are among the city businesses to sign up for monkeys.
A number of top-secret celebrity “monkey ambassadors” will be revealed in due course.
Mr Hallangen-Lake said: “It is strange how much people are willing to get involved based on nothing more than an idea.
“But now we have the HQ, it is a ‘real world’ thing and people will soon be able to watch through the windows as we groom the monkeys, ready for their new homes.”
