SCHOOLS secretary Ed Balls is facing a backlash from teachers over plans to make them undergo five-year check-ups to ensure they are fit to teach.
Some 10,000 members of the National Union of Teachers have signed postcards declaring their opposition.
Under the plans, contained in a White Paper published in June, teachers who fail their check-up will be banned.
The NUT said the “licence to teach” is unnecessary, and there are already “too many hoops for teachers to jump through”. The November issue of the NUT’s Teacher magazine contained a postcard for members to show their disapproval.
Mr Balls has said that the licence will put teachers on a par with doctors and solicitors.
