His sons George and Henry Lee took it over in 1860 and it became known as G&H Lee.
But the building which will now become TK Maxx started life as the Bon Marche department store, which opened in 1878.
In 1961, the store merged with George Henry Lee and the buildings were linked with a covered walkway.
George Henry Lee was bought by John Lewis in 1940, but kept the George Henry Lee name until 2002.
The whole store was originally due to be leased to Marks & Spencer, which was going to move in while its neighbouring store was refurbished.
But M&S changed its plans and the front of the store has remained empty.
Rapid moved into the Basnett Street end in August.
Liverpool PSDA, a Grosvenor company, bought Rapid’s former premises in Renshaw Street this year to ensure the hardware store could move.
Grosvenor said it hoped to come forward with plans for the former Rapid site in the New Year.
