How Merseyside has benefited from PFI credits

MERSEYSIDE has been assisted by numerous Private Finance Initiatives.

In 2007, the region was awarded £90m in PFI credits to cut landfill and increase composting and recycling.

Merseyside aimed to increase recycling from 18.5% to 45% by 2020, and cut landfill by more than 60%.

If nothing was done, it was argued, the costs of continuing to rely on landfill would become prohibitive.
