But even he was surprised when, during casting, a hopeful invitation to the playing squad was warmly received.

Jamie Carragher was first to get involved but soon captain Steven Gerrard and German international Didi Hamann both signed up to the project and Kirby admits that their roles have made his latest comedy something a bit special.

Speaking ahead of last night’s world premier, he said: "It was just a dream to get the players involved. We first approached Jamie about it but didn’t hold out much hope, but he got back and was keen to get involved and then Stevie and Didi agreed to it also.

"They were happy to let us take the mickey out of them a little bit and as fans will see it really makes the scene in the dressing room come to life."

"After all, that’s our city’s style isn’t it? Taking the Mickey out of ourselves and our mates and so the lads were happy to join in.

"As for Didi, well he’s an adopted Scouser now, just like Rafa, so he loved it and he’s really funny in it. He just blows away all conceptions of German’s being miserable. he’s brilliant

Kirby, whose previous stage hits include Brick Up The Mersey Tunnels, Lost Soul and Council Depot Blues, adds: "I simply had to pick up on the untold story of the best game in history.

"The significance of this result, with the Reds taking the cup home forever, it’s an incredible story in itself. But the tale of half time just had to be told."

The movie trailer has had almost 350,000 hits on YouTube and Kirby is expecting global sales when the DVD is released . . . . .

Kirby added: "People all over the world are talking about it. You only have to look at the success of the club internationally to see that it will have a worldwide appeal.

"It’s also unlike anything else because the players are actually starring in it.

"Now fans can not only relive the glory moment gut also see the pain on the faces of the Manchester United and Everton fans. But it’s all done with good fun and tongue in cheek."
