Jaume, whose other works include Crown Fountain, in Chicago, said: "By working together, people open their minds up to new possibilities and that's when something succeeds – just like Dream."

John Whaling, development manager at St Helens Council, said: "This award recognises our aspiration of putting St Helens on the map, as well as paying tribute to the heritage and amazing endeavours and industry that happened on the site.

"To get external recognition is fantastic and we hope it’s just the beginning of other accolades. Dream fills the void created when the mine was demolished and is creating a bright future for the borough."

Previous winners of the Marsh Award include Peter Randall-Page (2006), James Turrell (2007), and Ian Rank-Broadley for his powerful Armed Forces National Memorial at Alrewas, in Staffordshire (2008).
