Investigation launched after man dies at rail crossing on Wirral’s West Kirby line

A MAN died after being hit by a train at a crossing in Wirral yesterday morning.

The fatal collision happened at a crossing on Carlton Lane, Hoylake, close to Manor Road Station.

The man, who has not been named, was struck at 6.20am by an empty passenger train travelling to West Kirby.

A spokesman for the British Transport Police said: “We can confirm a male died at the location.

“Enquiries are on-going to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.

“It is not being treated as suspicious and we are appealing for any witnesses.”

The train was on its way from Kirkdale depot to begin the day’s service.

The man’s death is the third at crossings between Meols and West Kirby since 2007.

Jean Wilson, 80, and her dog, Poppy, were killed at Sandringham Avenue in July that year, while Clive Hanlon died crossing the tracks at Melrose Avenue, in January, 2008.
