THE Ropewalks area of Liverpool city centre is in contention for an urban regeneration award.
It was shortlisted along with Coin Street in London and the St Paul’s/Montpelier area of Bristol in the “great neighbourhood” category in the Academy of Urbanism awards.
The Academy of Urbanism is an independent organisation, formed in 2006, which brings together a diverse group of thinkers, decision-makers and practitioners involved in the social, cultural, economic, political and physical development of villages, towns and cities.
The Ropewalks has a concentration of 19th- century warehouses and merchants houses.
Much of the street pattern is the same today as it was 200 years ago.
Over the last 12 years, a regeneration programme saw the development of creative industries, a number of high-profile schemes, new public spaces and improved public realm.
It also pioneered the revival of city centre living.
Cllr Peter Millea, executive member for development, said: “The revitalisation of Ropewalks was one the city’s success stories over the last decade.”
The awards ceremony takes place in London tomorrow.
