North West Ambulance Service cleans up its act

MERSEYSIDE’S ambulance service has cleaned up its vehicles after inspections revealed they were dirty.

A Care Quality Commission report published today confirms that North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) met recommendations set after the revelations earlier this year.

Inspections showed vehicles did not meet hygiene standards and 41% of vehicles were in a very poor condition with visible dirt on the floors, walls and door frames.

The remaining vehicles were not cleaned to a good standard, and patients were being put at risk of infection as a result.

Today’s report shows the Trust is meeting regulations to protect patients and highlights some of the measures that have been successful.

They include the deep cleaning of all vehicles and equipment and a mandatory training programme on infection control.

Darren Hurrell, Chief Executive of NWAS, said: “We are very pleased to have received this report. The findings are a positive reflection of the dedication of all Trust staff.”
