Store brands sparkle in test

REVELLERS do not need to splash the cash on expensive Champagne this year, after supermarket own brands performed well in a taste test for a leading consumer guide.

Champagne from Sainsbury’s, The Co-operative and Oddbins all scored well in comparison to more expensive label brands, consumer guide Which? found.

But old favourite Veuve Clicquot Yellow Label Champagne Brut NV, selling at £31.91 a bottle, still came out on top among the 14 Champagnes tested.

Sainsbury’s Blanc de Noirs Champagne Brut NV was only 1% behind on 89% and around half the price at £15.98.

H Blin & Co Champagne Brut NV from Oddbins also scored 89% at £24.99, and supermarket The Co-operative followed closely behind with its Les Pionniers Champagne Brut, at £15.55 a bottle.
