WIRRAL Council is heading for an overspend of more than £2m by the end of the year, according to the latest figures released by the authority.
Most of the deficit stems from overspends by adult social services and children’s services, which have estimated they will each be £1.1m in the red.
Lower than expected income from pay and display car parks and parking tickets will also contribute to the deficit.
But, this estimate does not take into account the cost of the decision to reverse the closure of 11 libraries.
At the time the controversial library closure plan was abandoned, it was estimated this would add around £1m to the council’s costs.
A council spokeswoman said a report on the situation is to be brought to the ruling cabinet in January.
The predicted deficit comes as the council is already bracing itself to make savings of more than £20m a year, over the three years from 2011, to avert a massive budget deficit.
As reported in the Daily Post last month, the authority faces shortfalls in its budget of around £76.5m etween 2011 and 2014.
