CITY solicitor Rex Makin has been honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award by his peers in Liverpool.
Prof Makin received the accolade at the Liverpool Law Society AGM held last night, in recognition of his lengthy and distinguished career in the city.
Speaking after the event, held at the society’s base on Cotton Street, President Charlie Jones said: “Rex Makin’s contribution to legal life in Liverpool in the last 60 years has been colossal.
“You might not agree with him, but you can’t do anything but admire him.
“He stands up for what he believes in, and as a lawyer, he is a very clever man.” Prof Makin used the occasion to voice his concerns about the future of the legal profession, declaring that it has “acted generally like a Kamikaze Japanese pilot and destroyed itself,” through a variety of measures including the abolition of conveyancing monopoly and the rule on advertising.
He said:“Where the future lies, I don’t know.
“The only thing that’s bright on the horizon is perhaps an incoming government will have a look at the ghastly mess the Labour Government has allowed the profession to be made to descend to.”
