Exactly when an appointment will be made remains unclear, and today Merseyside Police Authority were tight-lipped.
A spokeswoman said: “The process is ongoing and we’ve had a healthy interest in the post.”
They refused to confirm if an appointment was likely before Christmas.
In September, previous chief Bernard Hogan-Howe stepped down after five years at the helm and his deputy, Bernard Lawson, has taken up the role on a temporary basis.
The role commands a £153,351 annual salary and offers a five-year contract, a relocation package of up to £20,000, and a fleet car for business and private use.
Mr Hogan-Howe now works for Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary (HMIC).
