Liverpool-Kirkby Merseytram on agenda for crucial meeting

A CRUCIAL meeting of the region’s super cabinet will today decide whether to proceed with plans to revive Merseytram.

The cabinet, made up of the leaders of Merseyside’s five councils, plus Halton, will consider a revised business case for the £400m-plus Line 1 from Liverpool to Kirkby.

In September, the Daily Post revealed how transport authority Merseytravel had been quietly been working behind the scenes to revive the scheme.

But, last month, Transport Minister Sadiq Khan appeared to kill off Merseytram in a letter in which he stated that Merseyside had missed its chance to get the scheme into a North West regional funding allocation.

He also warned local authorities to “look carefully at their continued development of the [Merseytram] scheme”.

Since the letter was made public, he has told leaders that he was “misinterpreted” and is due to write another letter to “clarify” his position.

Business leaders have also launched a campaign supporting Merseytram which is backed by the Liverpool Chamber of Commerce and lobby group Downtown Liverpool in Business.
