Remarkable progress of driver of Liverpool's collapsed crane

Iain Gillham

Mr Gillham was thrown from the cab and landed within the damaged apartments to be later rescued by firefighters.

He fractured his skull and suffered two sternum fractures, 11 spine fractures, a brain haemorrhage, a collapsed lung and serious crush injuries to his left shoulder and arm.

He spent 11 hours in theatre immediately after the crash where experts worked inserting rods and fixators to his battered spine.

Such is Mr Gillham’s progress that a trip to Cyprus planned with his wife Christine is now back on the agenda.

He has set up a "holiday fund" which he hopes to use to fly to the island once he leaves hospital.

And, despite his injuries, the 53- year-old has set his sights on driving a specially-modified car.

Christine added: "Our aim is to get Iain fully independent to allow him to lead a full life. He’s coming on in leaps and bounds.

"He can sit for three up to four minutes before he falls over and there’s a marked difference in his posture already.

"Robert Kirkland (from construction firm Bowman and Kirkland which managed the Chandlers Wharf site) came in to see him the other day to contribute to Iain’s holiday fund.

"Lots of people have been visiting wishing us well and helping how they can."
