Steam legend on track for a novel Liverpool Daily Post Christmas

SWING singer Asa Murphy and railway crime novelist Stephen Done line up for the Liverpool Daily Post’s Christmas steam train special.

They got in the mood by visiting the historic Lion locomotive, star of the Ealing Comedy film, The Titfield Thunderbolt.

Built in 1837 for the Liverpool & Manchester Railway, Lion is currently being restored by owners National Museums Liverpool.

Asa and Stephen will be on The Daily Post’s York Yuletide Express departing Liverpool and St Helens on Sunday, December 13.

They will also be among the guests on BBC Radio Merseyside’s special programme recorded onboard the train.

This two-hour show will be hosted by Linda McDermott and produced by Andy Ball for broadcast at noon on Christmas Day.

The York Yuletide Express will be hauled by Princess Royal class steam locomotive No 6201 Princess Elizabeth. Compared to Lion’s 172 years, “Lizzie” is a mere 76 years young.

This immensely powerful locomotive was formerly based at Liverpool Edge Hill Shed and holds the record for the fastest London to Glasgow return run by steam.
