TRIBUTES have been paid to city council stalwart Cllr Jack Spriggs, who passed away today.
Labour Fazakerley Cllr Spriggs, 74, described as "a true gentleman and an inspiration" by colleagues, died away after developing with pneumonia.
But despite his illness, Cllr Spriggs, who served as Lord Mayor in 2002, continued his council duties right up until the end. On Wednesday evening he attended the full council and helped Labour successfully move a key motion on the future of Merseytram, a motion carried by one vote.
Labour group leader Cllr Joe Anderson said everyone in the group was distraught at his passing.
Cllr Anderson added: "He was an inspiration to everyone and has been a leading figure for many years.
"He lived to serve his community and will be remembered for his huge generosity of spirit."
Fazakerley ward colleague Cllr Steve Rotheram added: "He was an insitution, a giant of politics."
Liberal Democrat Laurence Sidorczuk said: "He was a true gentleman that was respected by all and he will be sadly missed."
