Liverpool’s Flo Clucas is knighted by the Italians

Controversy over the sinking of the ship came about because the liner was not carrying a Red Cross sign, and therefore could not be identified as carrying prisoners and civilians.

Relatives of the lost passengers came to Liverpool from across Europe to see the plaque unveiled in July, 2008. It was placed at the Pier Head when the area’s regeneration was finished earlier this year.

Nunzia Di Cristo Bertali, the Italian Honorary Consul, will receive the same award as Cllr Clucas for her services to the Italian community and for the development of cultural and trade relations in Merseyside.

She said: “I am really delighted to receive this honour, especially because it has not been awarded solely for my services to the Italians.

“The great respect shown to historical events related to the Italians has been highly appreciated by my country and it has made me very proud of my role.”

Cllr Clucas, who represents Allerton and Hunts Cross, is Liverpool’s representative on the committee of the regions at the EU.
