A LANDMARK Liverpool church gained listed status in recognition of its special architecture and history.
Our Lady of Mount Carmel RC Church, and its neighbouring presbytery, in High Park Street, Toxteth, were granted Grade II listing after a written request made by a resident.
The church was built in 1876-8 by the noted Liverpudlian architect James O’Byrne, a pupil of Joseph and Charles Hansom, of Hansom cab fame.
It was built from red and brown brick with red sandstone dressings and is a prominent landmark.
It is believed the name of the church was partly selected because of the elevated position of the site, and its suggested representation of Mount Carmel.
