Liverpool escapes worst effects of snowfall

AS FORECASTERS predict more snow on its way, Merseyside seemed to have largely escaped the worst of the weekend’s weather disruption.

Liverpool John Lennon Airport closed the runway for half an hour following a particularly heavy snowfall yesterday, but otherwise flights were unaffected by local weather conditions.

Across the country, other regions were less fortunate.

In Kent, which has seen icy conditions and heavy snow, three people died after a collision between a car and a pick-up truck.

The AA said it had attended round 7,000 breakdowns by lunchtime.

The snow and ice also caused disruption to flights, with a number of airports, including Inverness and Belfast, closed for periods.

Flights in and out of Manchester were delayed for 90 minutes because of heavy snow but later the runway was clear and flights were beginning to move.

Liverpool JLA spokesman Robin Tudor said Liverpool had received many diverted flights from Manchester, which suffered more from the snowfall.

He said: “The weather has not stopped operations at the airport, but some flights have been cancelled because of problems at the other end.”
