Police drafted in to help traffic flow on Wirral retail park

POLICE are being brought in to help direct traffic at one of Wirral’s busiest retail parks over Christmas.

The owners of Bromborough’s Croft Retail & Leisure Park and Asda have announced that they will jointly fund police cover at peak times in the pre-Christmas period to deal with predicted amounts of heavy traffic.

Universities Superannuation Scheme Ltd (USS) said the move had come following suggestions by local councillors and discussions with Merseyside Police.

Bromborough councillor Steve Niblock said: “We have been working with USS and Asda for some time because of some difficulties with traffic at peak times at the retail park.

“We continue to work to try and address these issues, and this interim measure will hopefully help.”

USS and Asda will pay for three police officers to direct traffic at the Park and at Asda, at the busiest times on agreed dates. USS’s retail & leisure portfolio manager, Fergus Egan, said: “We have been working since February with local councillors, highway officers and Asda to devise measures which would help to relieve traffic pressures over the Christmas period and at other peak times.

“Unfortunately, this has not been a simple and straightforward process because of the many different land ownerships at the Park.

“Therefore, we decided to focus on temporary measures which could be put in place prior to Christmas, before trying to find more permanent solutions.”
