Liverpool University to face health and safety probe after botched chemistry experiment blast

Liverpool University's Victoria Building on Brownlow Hill

AN EXPLOSION at a Liverpool university laboratory which left two people injured will be investigated by health and safety bosses.

An experiment went badly wrong in the chemistry department on Crown Street on December 9 leaving students with flash burns and cuts to their faces from flying glass.

Windows on the first floor were blown out by the force of the blast which happened as two Ph.D. students mixed chemicals in a ceramic oil burner in a small fume cupboard.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) say they had decided to launch a formal investigation into the explosion after visiting the university the day after the incident.

A spokesman said the inquiry would determine if any action should be taken against the university – or even potentially lead to a prosecution.
