Pay cuts on the cards

MOST businesses are planning pay cuts or wage freezes next year while one in five is considering scrapping benefits such as a bonus or gym membership.

A survey of 260 firms by the British Chambers of Commerce suggested that workers will endure another tough year in 2010 as businesses continue to face an uphill struggle in tough trading conditions.

The research revealed two thirds of businesses planned wage freezes or cuts, while 18% considering the removal of benefits.
