Council cut spending over £11m gap in 2010 budget

SCRAPPING school uniform grants for needy children, closing children’s respite homes and swimming pools and slashing culture spending are among cuts proposed by cash-strapped city bosses.

The options have been put forward by officers as they try to plug an expected £11m gap in next year’s budget.

Opposition leaders said some of the cuts would be a “travesty of the council’s duty of care”.

Some senior Liberal Democrats are also uneasy about some of the proposals, but said savings need to be made if the council is to protect “front-line services”.

But Labour group deputy leader Cllr Paul Brant said his group would not support the cuts.

He added: “Cutting the uniform grant would be a totally unacceptable option for the Labour group and a Labour budget would not include cutting the service.”
