Government repairman travels 175 miles to change light bulb

A GOVERNMENT repairman travelled 175 miles – just to change a light bulb, it was revealed today.

The maintenance worker drove from London to Cheshire to replace bulbs in an office, a report claimed.

Contractors paid to carry out simple maintenance tasks are regularly travelling vast distances, according to probation officers’ union Napo.

Centralised contracts mean simple tasks are no longer being carried out by local companies, the report warned.

Staff reported electricians travelling from Manchester to Aberystwyth, in West Wales, to change light fittings.

Napo’s Harry Fletcher said: “It is quite clear that millions is being wasted on incompetent maintenance contracts.”
