MERSEYSIDE schools are to share nearly £8m which is being made available to offer extra tuition to pupils who are struggling with their English and maths.
The Government has pledged that by 2011 it will hand out £315m to local authorities throughout the country in a bid to help children who are falling behind in lessons in those subjects at school.
The money will be used to pay for one-to-one tuition to help those youngsters who might be struggling to get to grips with both English and maths.
Liverpool council is to get £2.17m; Sefton will get £1.36m; Knowsley will get £826,000, St Helens will get £870,000; and Wirral will get £1.6m.
Cheshire West and Chester council will also benefit from £1.47m.
