Ormskirk father in plea for more troops after son killed in Afghanistan

A FATHER-OF-THREE whose youngest son was killed in Afghanistan last New Year's Eve believes the Government should do more to support the troops already out there.

Cpl Liam Elms, from Wrightington, near Ormskirk, died after an explosion in Helmand Province while on operations with 45 Commando Royal Marines.

His father, Michael, said he believes more troops should be sent to Afghanistan. He said: “Liam always said he felt he was doing a worthwhile job. His last words to me were: ‘I'm where I want to be, doing what I want to do, with the people I want to be with. Don't worry.’

“After he died, we received a letter from an Afghan soldier who told us he was glad the Allied forces are there protecting his country. Receiving that meant a lot to us as a family.

“The soldiers are doing a brilliant job, despite being so stretched, and it’s pathetic that Gordon Brown said he will only send 500 more troops.

“He should be backing the servicemen out there 100 per cent and send more troops.”
