Warning over child virus increase in Merseyside

HEALTH chiefs across Merseyside have today issued a warning about an increase in children’s viruses.

Cases of the Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) have shot up in the last few weeks and some children are needing hospital treatment.

Dr Paula Grey, Director for Public Health for Liverpool, said: “We are seeing an increase in a number of viruses.

“RSV causes breathing difficulties and reported cases have tripled in the past four weeks and we are hearing that the number of children needing hospital treatment is going up.”

Dr Grey repeated the message that good respiratory and hand hygiene, particularly for children, is vital to stopping the spread of swine flu, RSV and other viruses that are circulating.

She added: “Our advice is to make sure that you cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, dispose of the tissue and then wash your hands.”
