A MERSEYSIDE soldier who died in Afghanistan will be given a full military funeral at Liverpool’s Anglican Cathedral this Friday.
Comrades of Corporal Simon Hornby, from the Duke of Lancaster's Regiment, will carry his coffin, draped in the Union flag, into the cathedral before a burial at Allerton Cemetery.
Corp Hornby, 29, who used to attend Halewood Comprehensive, was killed in an explosion while on foot patrol in the Nad-e-Ali area of Helmand on December 19.
His wife, Holly, described Corp Hornby, who had previously served in Iraq where he was awarded a commendation for discovering an improvised explosive device and spoiling an insurgent ambush, as her “hero”.
The service will take place at 1.30pm.
His family has requested no flowers and would prefer donations to Help for Heroes at www.helpforheroes.org.uk
