Liverpool children stopped from playing on frozen lakes

IN LIVERPOOL, council wardens have stopped more than 250 youngsters from playing on frozen ponds and lakes in the city's parks, the city council said.

Some parents have even been spotted taking children across frozen lakes in Stanley Park and Sefton Park.

The council said it expected most schools to re-open today as many secondary schools have A-level exams taking place.

Council workers had been out this weekend to grit around many primary and secondary schools.

Major roads and bus routes in the city have been gritted but, with light snow forecast, were due to be treated again last night if required.

A further 100 tonnes of rock salt are to be delivered today and a further 100 tonnes on Tuesday.

Teams of staff have also been working throughout the weekend clearing ice and snow from pavements at bus and rail stations, priority pavements in the city centre and district shopping centres and at pedestrian crossings. Bin collections are also scheduled to restart today, weather permitting.

The council also made a public appeal for residents to look after elderly and vulnerable neighbours.

Merseyside Police warned motorists and pedestrians to take extra care because more snow is forecast overnight.
