AN AWARD-WINNING writer and journalist delivered the first Reverend Jesse Jackson lecture at Liverpool’s International Slavery Museum.
Gary Younge, a New York-based columnist who has written for a variety of newspapers and magazines, spoke about the effects of President Barack Obama’s first year in office.
The annual lecture was set up after a visit by Rev Jackson to Edge Hill University in Ormskirk, and is the first in a series of events to mark the university’s 125th anniversary this year.
During his visit, Rev Jackson was presented with an honorary fellowship, and a scholarship was also set up in his name.
Stuart Speeden, director of the university’s Centre for Local Policy Studies (CLPS), said: “Reverend Jackson’s strong message is that there is hope, but that there is still work to be done if we are to achieve true racial equality.
“We hope that these annual lectures will help continue to spread the message.”
