A YEAR after Liverpool students celebrated beating the national average at GCSE for the first time, they now have cause for a second celebration.

Not only have they beaten their national counterparts, but have also narrowly beaten their equivalents in Wirral.

Government figures out today show 73.6% of students gained five or more A*-C grades rising above the national average of 70%.

They also show Liverpool sneaked ahead of Wirral, where 73.3% got the same grades.

And the authority also beat students in St Helens, Halton and the region’s worst performing authority - Knowsley.

Today, Liverpool City Council’s executive member for education, Cllr Keith Turner, said the city’s education was going from “strength to strength.”

He said: "I'm absolutely delighted with these results. It's a fantastic achievement and reflects the huge investment going into developing a first-class education service in Liverpool.

"I would like to congratulate our young people, along with teachers and parents, for their hard work and dedication and the ongoing improvement shows that education really is going from strength to strength.”

Showing optimism for the future, he added: “Our £500m Building Schools for the Future programme will create the environment for us to further drive up educational achievement.”

But, despite the overall results, there’s still work to do to improve the number of students getting good GCSEs including English and maths. Of the students across the city, a record 44.3% gained five A*-Cs including English and maths. This still falls below the national average of 49.8%, despite improving on last year’s 41.2%.

At this level, Wirral pupils are doing better with an annual rise from 50.2% to 53.8%.

Among the top schools helping the city’s success was Wavertree’s Blue Coat School, with 100% of students getting five or more A*-C grades, including English and maths, for the second year running.

The Belvedere Academy, now in its third year as an academy in Princes Park, also took a step closer to full marks with 96% of pupils getting the top grades.
