Tributes to Runcorn school technician who refused to retire

MORE than 1,000 tributes were left to a “legendary” school technician who refused to retire.

Liverpool-born Gerry Egan, 66, loved his job at Runcorn secondary St Chad’s so much he persuaded the board of governors to let him stay on when he became a pensioner.

He gave his technological expertise to the school for 10 years, ensuring pupils used machinery correctly and safely in lessons such as metalwork and woodwork. The father-of-three’s death from a suspected heart attack stunned pupils and staff at the school.

Head teacher Andrew Keeley said: “Gerry had worked at St Chad’s since 2000 and loved it here because we loved having him here.

“He even applied to the governors, and was successful, to work beyond retirement age. I think it is fair to say that Gerry was a lovely man and is loved by all who know him.”
