Liverpool Council spent £20,000 on leaflet celebrating its improved financial management

CITY bosses spent £20,500 of taxpayers’ cash on leaflets celebrating no longer being the worst financially-managed council in the country.

The glossy mail shot, commissioned after the Audit Commission gave the council a three-star rating, includes the same information likely to be posted out to all households in the next edition of the in-house produced City Magazine.

While town hall bosses said they have a “legal duty” to keep residents informed, critics attacked what they called “rampant self-promotion”.

But council leader Warren Bradley said: “We took the decision to inform citizens of the efficiency of our services, which as we know are some of the best in the country.

“The document is very similar to that distributed to council staff, who deserve credit for their achievements over the last two years.”
