PLANS to transform a former tip into an outdoor pleasure park have won government money.
The Northwest Development Agency (NWDA) has offered the Forestry Commission almost £2.4m to regenerate the old Bromborough waste landfill site.
The deal was brokered by outgoing Wirral South MP Ben Chapman.
The Commission has yet to give the final go-ahead to the project, but before Christmas programme manager Chris Waterfield signalled it would be a formality once funding was assured.
The plan, put together under the Newlands programme and the Mersey Coastal Park Strategy, will include extensive landscaping.
Trees and grass will be planted, benches, paths and cycle tracks laid, and an “iconic sculpture” erected at the new park’s highest point.
Mr Chapman said: “Art features will go with the already stunning panoramic views from the summit of the River Mersey and the Liverpool skyline.
“My constituents living in the vicinity had, for a long time, to endure a catalogue of landfill-associated unpleasantries – diminishing views, noise, flies, odours, rodents and other inconvenience.
“The NWDA’s decision is an important milestone, and I am absolutely delighted.
“The grass is growing and the whole area will be transformed.”
