Plans to turn Wirral's Bromborough landfill site into outdoor pleasure park win government funding

A formal announcement giving the final green light is expected at a meeting at the end of this week at Bromborough civic centre.

Mr Chapman, who is standing down at the next election following a row over his Parliamentary expenses, has campaigned for several years to remove the blot on the landscape.

He was backed by Wirral Council, the organisation Groundwork and several ministers.

The Bromborough scheme is one of six ambitious ideas making up the Mersey Coastal Park Strategy, a £10m blueprint to turn Wirral’s coastline into a major attraction.

The council has teamed up with the prestigious Royal Mersey Yacht Club (RMYC), in Rock Ferry, which is working on its own scheme to build a new clubhouse, refurbish a disused pier formerly used by an oil company and create a 100-berth marina to bring international sailing competitions back to Wirral.

It is also seeking investment to refurbish the derelict esplanade at Rock Ferry and overhaul Eastham Country Park, Shorefields Community Nature Park and Wirral International Business Park.
