Hope chapel
It will continue to play a major role in the community with midweek morning and evening prayer, Anglican Eucharist and Catholic Mass.
The university was keen to ensure the restoration project did not deviate from its original design.
Its distinctive roof, although restored with sheet zinc instead of the now much more expensive copper, retains a pyramid, albeit slightly lower than the original.
Erected in 1966 and designed by Architects Weightman and Bullen, the Civic Design award- winning chapel’s modern design inspired the blueprint of the city’s Metropolitan Cathedral.
Professor Gerald Pillay, the university’s vice-chancellor and rector, said: “There was no compromise in funds to restore the chapel to its former integrity, and the university has worked tirelessly to raise funds to repair the damage.”
The restoration followed donations from university alumni, community organisations and Friends of Hope, as well as a significant financial contribution from the Anglican Diocese of Liverpool.
